Treatments

There are 2 main kinds of inverted nipples surgeries. They are surgery with removal of milk ducts and surgery with partial restoration or preservation of milk ducts.

Removal of milk ducts surgery:

This surgery is also called nipple correction mastectomy. In this surgery, the milk ducts are completely removed. This surgery is a bit more invasive and is usually only recommended for women who have very inverted nipples. The steps involved in the procedure are

  • The physician will provide local anesthesia to the areola and nipple.
  • A small incision in the areola will be made
  • The inverted nipples will be freed and the milk ducts will be removed.
  • The incision will then be closed with sutures

Partial restoration or preservation of milk ducts surgery:

This surgery is also called nipple correction reduction. In this surgery, the milk ducts are partially preserved. This surgery is less invasive and is a good option for women who have mildly inverted nipples. The surgical procedure involves:

  • First, the surgeon will make an incision around the areola.
  • Next, they will release the milk ducts from the surrounding tissue.
  • The surgeon will then cut away any excess skin or tissue.
  • Finally, they will suture the milk ducts back in place.

Each surgery may take up to 2 hours to complete and the patient may be allowed to go home the same day. Discuss with your physician about the inverted nipple correction surgery risks as well as which procedure is best for you
