Understanding Acne Scars

  • Acne scars develop when inflammatory acne damages the skin’s deeper layers, leading to permanent textural changes and pigmentation. They form when the skin’s healing process is disrupted, resulting in either depressed (atrophic) or raised (hypertrophic) scars. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) can also accompany scarring, leaving dark spots on the skin.
  • Atrophic scars (depressed scars) include ice pick, boxcar, and rolling scars.
  • Hypertrophic scars (raised scars) are thick, overgrown tissue formations.
  • PIH (dark marks) results from melanin overproduction after inflammation.
  • Picking or popping pimples increases the risk of scarring.

Signs & Symptoms

Indented or raised marks where acne once appeared.

Dark brown, red, or purple pigmentation on healed acne spots.

Uneven skin texture with pitted or bumpy areas.

Scars become more noticeable with age due to collagen loss.
