Introduction
With age comes tons of skin concerns, especially that of the face. Wrinkles, pigments, spots, freckles, scars, and more. As the skin ages, skincare becomes a tougher game. Our skin naturally produces elastin and collagen to repair and keep the skin smooth. As we age, the amount of collagen and elastin produced decreases considerably leaving the skin with blemishes and scars. Home remedies, on-the-counter medications, routine creams and skincare products, do not often give the result that one desires. Cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels offer a remarkable and long-lasting result.
Now let us address the first question – What is a chemical peel? A chemical peel is a cosmetic facial procedure that uses chemical solutions such as salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid and others for removing pigments and scars. These chemical solutions are applied to gently peel off the top layer of the facial skin. A fresh layer of skin is obtained after a chemical peel and the solutions penetrate into the skin making it an effective solution to make the skin smooth.
Three types of chemical peel treatments
Light / Superficial Chemical Peel
A light chemical skin peel will use a mild acid that is applied on the skin. The outer skin exfoliates and peels off the layer of the epidermis. A fresh new layer of the skin that is smooth and even in skin tone can be obtained. This treatment is used to treat minor discolouration, acne, wrinkles and dryness. The patient might have to repeat the procedure in every 4 to 5 weeks to keep the results as it is.
Medium Chemical Peel –
This type of facial chemical peel uses solutions such as glycolic acid. The solution will treat the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and the top layer of the dermis. Stubborn wrinkles, acne scars, blemishes and pigmentation can be treated with this facial peel.
Deep Chemical Peel –
This chemical peel for face is ideally the best option for individuals who are struggling with deep facial scars and hard pigments. Chemical solutions such as trichloroacetic acid is used and it penetrates deep into the layers of the dermis. Most facial concerns can be addressed with a deep chemical peel including age spots, freckles, extremely dry skin and scars. A repeat session is usually not required for a long time post this facial peel.
All the above are efficient as chemical peel for face, neck and hands. The results of a chemical peel are dependent on the type of peel chosen. If you are looking at receiving stunning results to the otherwise tough scars and spots, deep peel would work well. Chemical peels are a safe cosmetic procedure and must be done only by a board certified surgeon for best results. It may not be possible for the patient to pick the one best chemical peel by themselves but a doctor would be able to help in making the right choice.
